Windward Orchid Society Orchids Unmasked

The Coronavirus has us sheltering in place, social distancing and wearing masks. In the meantime, our orchids are putting on a show that we would normally share with many people through orchid shows and meetings.

These blooms are not going to wait. So, we are going to unmask our Windward Orchid Society members’ orchids through this webpage.
  • See your newsletters for instructions on how to get your orchid pictures, tips and stories posted here.
  • Submissions are allowed only from Windward Orchid Society members.
  • Start taking pictures and think about captions.

Have fun.

Dendrochilum bicallosum

By Walter Hiraishi
01-23-2021

Dendrochilum bicallosum will bloom about this time of year. Most Ddc will flower in wintertime. The filiforme will bloom summer to autumn.

Question by Deborah Collins
What is the difference/relationship between the Dendrochilum bicallosum and the filiforme?

Reply by Walter Hiraishi
I’ll try to answer your question about the differences and similarities between the 2 species.

Both plants produce pendant like chain with many tiny flowers. The long flower spikes with countless, dense small flowers have a strong scent. Both grows well in baskets or rocks.

The filiforme, also called “Chain Orchids”, is a nice yellow color.
It blooms from about June - Sept.

Ddc. bicallosum, now called Ddc. convallariforme. and also called “Necklace Orchid”, has a variety of colors from very light yellow to almost brownish. This plant may throw flowers about 1-3 times a year and flushes out in winter.
Hope this will help you on the characteristics of these 2 Ddc.

Polystachya concreta or the Yellow Helmet Orchid

By Tom Stuart
01-07-2021

This is an orchid I found growing on some logs someone was throwing out. Can you identify it for me?

Reply by Scot Mitamura
I had to bust my brains over this, but I finally remembered the name of this orchid.  It is Polystachya concreta or the Yellow Helmet Orchid.  It is found in the tropical and subtropical Americas, as well as Africa, and Asia.  Funny that it is widely spread around the world, but is considered endangered in Florida.  It is often found on dead branches, in woodlands to swampy areas.  Many folks mistake it for one of our native orchids, but nevertheless it is a cool find!

Hope all is well. Here are two photos, the purple I call a miniature cattleya and the yellow I call a spider. The yellow was a gift from my sister in law who recently passed and its bloom this year is bittersweet.

Reply by Walter Hiraishi

My guess is that both plants belong to the Brassocattleya family.
The first is called Brassanthe Maikai ‘Mayumi’.
The yellow flower is called Brassolaelia Yellow Bird. Some call this Yellow bird.
Hope this helps

Dendrobium tiongii

Den bullenianum flowering again. These flowers appear to being similar to Den Usitae (previous photos).

Notice the stripes (red) and these always have clusters bunched together.

This plant, called Dendrobium tiongii appears to look like the bullenianum but no stripes at all. What’s unusual is that the stalks grow upright as compared to the Usitae, bullenianum,  goldschmidtianum etc.

I didn’t think dendrobiums had spikes that branched, so I’m just sharing this curiosity
Help with the name would’ve welcome!

Reply by Scot Mitamura

It looks like you have one of the Dendrobiums developed by the University of Hawaii for our cut flower industry.  It looks like a Den. Jaquelyn Thomas, which is a primary hybrid of Den. gouldii x biggibum.  On rare occasions Dendrobiums spikes can form laterals.  This also could be a mild case of plant fascination, which is an abnormal fusing of plant tissue.  This could be caused by a number of reasons such as herbicide damage, genetic mutations, bacterial or viral pathogens, etc.  In severe cases the stem could become thick and flattened with many spikes and or flowers fusing together.  In your case it is beneficial because it increases the number of flowers on your spike, while maintaining the gracefulness of the inflorescence.  Monitor it, if it stable then just enjoy the added flowers.  If it becomes worse and unsightly, then trim the mutated areas and see if it grows out of it.

or 木石斛 (mu shi hu),
an epiphytic orchid native to Asia, Southeast Asia, New Guinea and Christmas Island. It has two rows on leaves along its pseudobulb and relatively large but short-lived, strongly scented white flowers.” (Edited from Wikipedia)

Brassavola cucullata

By Patti Kawahakui
06-09-2020

So happy to see this pua!
Back in the early 2000, I had a cucullata from H&R and I really liked how the flowers looked—the plant had a lot of flowers, but I eventually killed it.   So, a few years ago, when I saw a community pot at H&R, I bought it.  Only a couple plants survived in pots.  There’s one growing on the plumeria tree—no flowers yet.
The other day when I was checking on the orchids, I turned and saw the pua; I was so happy!!!
God willing, one day, the plant will have more than pua at the same time!!!

Many may not remember me, but I’m a lifetime member of our great club, WOS since 1999.
I thought you may like to post or share the photos and attached article about Den. Gatton Sunray. The orchid is blooming right now, 6 May 2020, outside on my lanai here in Homosassa, FL.

Along with the photos is an article attached that I want to share with the WOS, and in particular with Dot Sakamoto. We have this orchid as a reminder of her. She gave it to us as a little keiki in 1999.  In fact, many orchids in my collection are still the ones that friends at WOS gave to me back then.

The Greenish one is Coelogyne Pandurata
The Orange center one is Coelogyne burfordiense

I’m working from home so on a break I went and peeked at what could be blooming in my greenhouse.
Found all my Coelogyne in full display!!!

The Greenish one is Coelogyne Pandurata and the Orange center one is Coelogyne burfordiense   assuming I can read the teeeeeny tiny handwriting on my tags….from Wilbur Chang!!!!

He had them labeled with a big “O” or “G” to tell them apart.   The plants grow exactly the same, so only when they bloom can you tell which is Orange & which is Green.

Hope you all are safe & healthy!!

Lemon Chiffon

I took a class on orchid growing basics 15+ years ago at Ho’omalohia botanical garden and potted a seedling of this plant (Lemon Chiffon I think?).  A few years later I divided the plant and put half on this log where it’s been ever since, sort of out of site.  What a surprise to find all these blossoms!

Both vandas have 3 sprays on each plant.
I think they are tricolor but never realized that the blossoms are different in size and color.

Years ago, these two nobile plants (they had name tags) were dying so I stuck them in a tree outside my kitchen window.  Now, they’re a blessing as I can glance out the window and see their beautiful blooms!  Truly a second chance in life!

No social distancing for these very fragrant blooms.
This species is happy in full sun, growing in the ground and you can smell her coconut fragrant flowers as you walk by!

Bought this plant from Walter Hiraishi in 2018. Transplanted her and she’s been in this pot,  hanging out since April 7, 2018. Most blooms she’s very had—yay!

Here’s another small first-timer-in-time-of-pandemic. This could be a WOS meeting hands-on-mounting plant. I’ve had it for years, just hanging there, doing nothing in particular.

Dtps. I-Hsin Sesame

By Deborah Collins
04-19-2020.
I have been able get more blooms by saving the new buds from aphids. When I notice the telltale sticky honeydew drops on the new buds, I spray it with Orange Guard which kills the aphids and ants. Sometimes I need to reapply the Orange Guard after a week or so when new aphids hatch or otherwise manage to find the new buds.

Oddly, my orchid is growing leaves on a spike where it would normally have flower blooms.
