January is normally a really slow month for flowers; mainly phalaenopsis and complex paphiopedilums, and latourea dendrobiums.
With our short days, try to keep your orchids on the dry side to avoid fungal infections.
I received a question today about why their orchid plant's roots are not going down into the media. This is similar to the question last month.
Simply put is that it doesn't want to! There are a multitude of reasons why. The most common reason is that the media is probably getting old. The older it gets, the soggier it gets. Salts build up, pH goes down (becomes more acid), old roots die and the media gets clogged up. So of course new roots, if you have any, will not want to go into this toxic media. So, try to repot your orchids every two years or less.
Also, some roots do not go into the media. Some Grammatophyllum roots grow upwards, as well as Vanda roots. Phalaenopsis schilleriana, or many pink phalaenopsis have flattened roots that will just stay on top of the media. In these cases, make sure that you provide lots of air around the roots, allowing them to dry between watering cycles.
Always observe what the orchid is doing, it will give you clues on how it wants to be grown.
